Pathways of entry of pests and their significance

The project aimed to estimate 1) the volume of the pathways for entry of pests to Finland and 2) the economic value at risk in the different sectors of plant production in Finland. The objective was to collect data needed when assessing risks related to different pathways of entry, sectors of plant production or individual pest species.

The project was part of a larger project entitled “Increasing knowledge on invasive alien species (IAS) in Finland – distribution, dispersal, risk management, pathways for entry” (HAVINA) involving a number of research institutes such as the Finnish Environment Institute, Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute, and the Finnish Museum of Natural History.

The results of the project are published in a report Pathways for introduction of invasive pests and the value of production at risk in the different sectors of plant production (Hannunen et al. 2014). The report is in Finnish, but most of the results and an outline of the used methods are presented in English in this document:  Pathways for introduction of invasive pests to Finland and the value of production at risk in the different sectors of plant production in Finland. If you wish to use the estimates, please contact Salla Hannunen (salla.hannunen@foodauthority.fi) to get information about the assumptions and uncertainties related to the data.
