Eleven more cases of African swine fever confirmed

August 11/2026

Eleven new cases of African swine fever (ASF) have been confirmed in In the Finnish Food Authority’s investigations in the infected zone in Southeast Finland. Five of these cases were within the previously defined core area and six outside it but still within the infected zone. A total of 14 infected wild boars have been found so far. The Finnish Food Authority will expand the core area this week.

New findings outside the core area are located in a small area approximately one kilometre from the edge of the core area on the border of the municipalities of Miehikkälä and Virolahti. Berry and mushroom pickers and other people in the terrain are asked to avoid moving in the area before the area is more specifically defined and a map is published.

You can find a map of the infected zone and the content of the current restrictions on the Finnish Food Authority’s website.

A search is still ongoing for dead and sick wild boars in the terrain within the infected zone’s core area to determine the spread of the infection. The Finnish Food Authority has trained a total of approximately 400 volunteer hunters for the search. All dead wild boars and their parts found in the terrain are collected and the samples taken from them are sent to the Finnish Food Authority’s laboratory for testing for African swine fever.
