Risk assesment on rabies and Echinococcus multilocularis of companion animals from Ukraine

As a consequence of the war in Ukraine, the European Commission asked member countries to allow pets from Ukraine to enter EU territory with their war fleeing owners even if the pet's entry requirements were not met.

The Food Authority's Risk Assessment Unit conducted a rapid risk assessment on the rabies and Echinococcus multilocularis risk via movements of pets from Ukraine.

It was concluded that it is possible for both rabies and echinococcus to enter Finland. It was also noted that there are large uncertainties in the assessment that cannot be eliminated in light of current knowledge.
