This project studied the relationship between structural developments in livestock production and animal diseases, with a particular view on the effects of structural developments on the competitiveness and risks of livestock production in Finland. In addition, the study produced specific data on the efficiency of various methods of risk management in Finland.
Project objects were to
1. Study developments in the structure (number, locations, sizes, operational methods of farms) of livestock production, and how alternative structural developments affect competitiveness, and production costs of pork, milk and beef.
2. Study the effects of the alternative structural developments based on the farm-level operational models mentioned above on risks from contagious animal diseases, and on the costs thereof, particularly analyzing the effects of production aspects becoming increasingly common, such as bovine three-phase production, sow pools or sheep production.
3. Study applicable methods of risk management, and how to control structural developments so that the possible risks of animal diseases related with increasing farm sizes, regional location of production and implementation of new production methods do not become too significant.
4. Compare the efficiency of risk-management methods in various epidemiologic situations and at the same time find meters (risk classification) that improve efficient targeting of risk management to farms and regions with different risks.
