For the consumer, one of the most important labels on food packaging is the name of the food. The name states concisely which food it is.

The name of the food used must be

  • the name provided for in European Community law, or
  • the established name generally used in Finland or
  • if there is no such name, a name that describes the food and, if necessary, its use, so as to accurately identify the food concerned and distinguish it from foods with which it could otherwise be confused.

Food business operators must have sufficient and accurate information

Under the Food Act, food business operators must possess sufficient and accurate information about the food they make, import, export, pack, market, serve or otherwise distribute. Food business operators must provide their customers with sufficient and accurate information about the pre-packed and non-prepacked foods they offer for sale.

The name of the food must describe and accurately identify the food

When naming a food, it is essential that the name of the food does not mislead the consumer as to its nature, properties, composition or other factors. Likewise, the marketing name of the food, which is optional information, must not mislead the consumer of the product.

Information provided about the food must be accurate, clear and easy to understand for the consumer. For more information on naming a food, see the Finnish Food Authority's Guide 17068/2  (in Finnish). Food Information Guide for Food Supervisors and Food Business Operators.
