Research seminar, 9 January 2019: Multivariate analyses of the origin of strawberries

January 4/2019

Senior Researcher Annikki Welling, PhD, from the Composition and Origin Section of the Finnish Food Authority’s Chemistry Unit talks about methods for verifying the geographical origin of strawberries.

The presentation focuses on a joint project of the former Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira – now the Finnish Food Authority – and the Natural Resources Institute Finland, which aims to develop an analytical method for establishing the geographical origin of strawberries. The project involves analysing a comprehensive sample of Finnish strawberries for the relative abundance of certain stable isotopes and their chemical element content. The results are turned into a model using multivariate statistical methods. In the future, researchers will be able to determine the origin of strawberry samples by analysing the samples for the relevant isotopes and/or chemical elements and by comparing the results against the model of Finnish strawberries.

The research seminar takes place in auditorium C111 at Mustialankatu 3 in Viikki, Helsinki
at 3.00 - 4.00 p.m. on Wednesday, 9 January 2019. The seminar is in Finnish.
The seminar is public, and there is no need to sign up in advance.
