Abstract:
The aim of the project is to obtain information on the long-term effects on fish caused by wastewater discharges from the Talvivaara mine in Sotkamo, because the accumulation of sediment heavy metal concentrations in fish is not necessarily a rapid process. Even though previous findings have shown that the fish are safe to eat, follow-up analyses are required in order to establish whether any changes in the concentrations have taken place over a longer monitoring period. The project is a continuation of a study launched in 2012 for analysing tissue alterations and concentrations of heavy metals in fish tissue possibly caused by the wastewater that has entered the bodies of water due to a gypsum pond leakage at the Talvivaara mine.
Aims:
The project is aimed at obtaining information on the long-term effects on fish caused by wastewater discharges (heavy metals) from the Talvivaara mine.
Results:
A summary report will be drawn up by the end of 2015. Interim findings will be published in April - May and
November - December.
