Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in domestic animals and its impact on infections between animals and humans

Aims:

The general aims of the project are to recognize MRSA transmission between animals and humans, to reveal occurrence of MRSA carriage and factors related to MRSA carriage in pigs, to improve surveillance and epidemiological investigations on multiresistant zoonotic bacteria, and to prepare for possible MRSA control initiatives on animal production holdings.

Specific objectives include:

  • Revealing MRSA carriage in humans working or living on MRSA positive pig farms.
  • Identifying MRSA positive pig herds and the origin of the MRSA strains found in Finnish pigs.
  • Comparing molecular characteristics between Finnish human and animal MRSA strains.
