Hereditary diseases affecting the welfare of dogs and cats

Aims:

The overall goal of the project is to improve the well-being of animals by identifying new diseases that significantly impair the health of animals. The project concentrates on the study of hereditary diseases. The objectives are to describe new diseases so that affected animals can be indentified, to study the pathogenesis and inheritability of the disease and to find the genes responsible for it. In companion animals hereditary diseases are very important and markedly affect the life-span and quality of life. In addition the hereditary diseases of animals can be used to study the pathogenesis of human diseases.
