Impacts and prevention of Mycoplasma bovis infection in cattle industry in Finland

Abstract:

The project attempts to determine the epidemiology of M. bovis infections in cattle. Laboratory diagnostics will be made more efficient. Infected dairy cattle is studied to find ways to control M. bovis and to cure the cattle. The effects of M. bovis infection on beef cattle raising is studied, trying to find ways to utilise inspection results for health care at beef cattle farms.

Aims:

The objective is to have means to control M. bovis infections in dairy cattle and to improve the efficiency of the M. bovis control programme. This is related to the reliability of related M. bovis studies, and the reduction of risks in affected farms and in animal trade between farms. The overall objective is to create better conditions for Finnish dairy and feed cattle production, improve bovine health and well-being, reduce the need and use of antibiotics in beef production and thereby promote the purity and safety of Finnish meat production.
